Episode 95: Clarifying Your Values to Set Meaningful Goals

The new year often sparks renewal as we set fresh goals and intentions. As we transition into February, take time to revisit the goals you’ve outlined for 2024. Have your priorities or motivations changed? Consider the driving forces behind your aspirations using these helpful prompts:

Start with Your Values

Your values inform your goals. Understanding what matters most guides your intentions and desired outcomes. Ask yourself: What do I value? How do I want to see those values in action through my goals? Taking stock of your principles clarifies why particular aims hold meaning and importance.

Evaluate Motivations

Next, reflect on what motivates you, both extrinsically and intrinsically. Extrinsic motivators like money or accolades fuel short-term ambition, while intrinsic inspiration from purpose and meaning sustains long-term passion. Track when and why you feel motivated so you recognize useful prompts.

Give Yourself Permission to Hope

Finally, reframe goals from a place of lack or desperation into one of hope and empowerment. Envision how accomplishing aims might positively impact yourself and others. An outlook grounded in optimism changes how you approach objectives.

As spring sprouts renewal, revisit goals through a lens of intentionality. Connect to your purpose and anchor in authentic motivations to drive sustainable growth. Allow fresh possibility to reinvigorate your aspirations.

Kiva Slade 0:46

Hello, and welcome to this episode of Collab with Kiva. Welcome to season three, yay, I am excited to be back. There are definitely some changes happening in my life, in this podcast, my business, so many different things that are taking place. But even in the midst of that, I totally wanted to make sure that I came back with Season Three didn't come back when I thought it would. But hey, good things come to those who wait. So thank you for waiting for this new season to start. And there's a shift in it.

Kiva Slade 1:32

You know, year one of my podcasts was really about women and starting your business and the things that you needed to know. Year two, we really shift it to still saying things you need to know about your business, but really such a focus on your data and getting rooted in your numbers and not being afraid of your numbers. And you guys always know I always talk about Toni Braxton being with Oprah. You know, you always need to know what your numbers are in your business, whatever those numbers might be.

Kiva Slade 2:04

And so for year three, if you were paying attention in the intro..yeah, this is really about mindset. It's really about coaching. And I feel this podcast has evolved with my business and me, and my own personal evolution as a business owner, as a woman, and the things that have been important to me. And even if you know your numbers, and even if you have those solid foundations in your business, and you've taken care of the legal and your branding, and all of the other amazing parts, there comes a time when your business as it continues to grow. You have mindset issues, they don't go away, they just change with each level of our business that we go to. And also at each level of life. And in addition to mindset, you know, there's just things that we need coaching around, there's things that we need someone else to kind of check our thinking, are we really approaching this in the right way? Are we rooted and grounded in this? Is this the best decision for us? Or is this the best decision that we're hearing everybody else is doing or making? And we think therefore, it's a good one for us. And then the reality, a common thread through all three seasons is what is it that you want? What is it that you need, because you are uniquely you, your business is uniquely it because of you. And whatever your secret sauce is. So that theme is continuing this year, just in a different way or in the season in a different way, again, showing up through coaching, mindset, which parallels some of the changes in my business really with a focus on coaching and consulting. That has been where I show up so much in my strengths, where I can show up very authentically, where I show up bringing maximum value. And it's just been a very exciting journey. And it's also very and my grad school professor, which shoot me right now for all these very's. It's also been quite affirming, and also reaffirming.

Kiva Slade 4:37

I took some time to send out a reflective survey from previous clients. I mean clients that I had when I was a VA, then OBM, a DOO throughout the last four years of my business, and the feedback that I got back was oh my goodness for so many of us we are doing in giving and providing so much more than our title. And if you aren't seeing the video, you missed my air quotes. But we are doing providing giving so much more than our title. And those survey results confirmed so much of that in so many ways. And even seeing, reading, hearing the things that, you know, I partnered with my clients within their businesses that are still impactful for them. Two years later, three years later, the work you do has value, it has meaning. And not all the time do we know that? Nor do we realize it. Nor do we think about our work sometimes in that way.

Kiva Slade 5:54

So in this, season three, we're going to think about our work sometimes in that way, I'm going to prod you to think about your work in that way, we're going to prod you to also do your own reflective surveys, find out what has been the impact of working with you? How has it changed someone's business, someone's life? That change, has you as a common denominator. How does that help you show up better or different for your own self.

Kiva Slade 6:31

So we are in February. And if January was anything for you like it was for me, you kind of felt like, hey, you know what we were just trying out this new year, now we're really in the new year, I spent part of January sick. And I don't know all the bugs that are going around, but they last longer than normal bugs. And so January felt very blurry, at least in the beginning. And then there was some additional transitions that took place. And it was just like, oh, goodness gracious, when is January going to end. And it's so interesting now to be in February, and heading towards, you know, spring in March and that time of renewal. Unless you're in the southern hemisphere, hemisphere, you're already in the summery mountains and hot weather. But for those in the northern hemisphere, you know, we're still approaching that. Even today I took the dog out for a walk. And I'm seeing buds on trees. And it's it's it's it's exciting, it's exciting, it's gets me giddy and excited because, again, it's renewable, it's rebirth, it's it's new newness is popping up through the ground, some of its weeds that you do have to get those out. But also, there's gonna be flowers and bulbs and things that are just going to be bringing joy and color and life, you know, to our lives.

Kiva Slade 7:52

So I'm so excited to you know head and dive deeper into season three. But as we head into this February, and again, maybe you've said a word for the year, maybe you have chosen words for the year, goals for the year, goals for this quarter. I want you to take a moment and backtrack, where I always start people in business and in personal life, what are your values? What are your values? Because in all, you know, for all intents and purposes, our values are what drives our goals. So what are you valuing? What do you value? And I want you to take time to think about that. So what do you value. And I want to see those values in action. And in order for me to see them in action on your goals, in order for you to see them in action in your goals, you're going to have to first know what your values are. So I want you to think about what are your values because your values are what drives your goals. And you can ask yourself, like, why is this goal important to you? Because sometimes we have goals that again, they're not necessarily important to us, they've been important to someone else, or we think that they should be important to us. Take some time to reflect in why that goal is important to you. No one else, just you.

Kiva Slade 9:33

And then think about what motivates you because we have our goals that are driving it. And then we have extrinsic and intrinsic motivations. You know, are you being motivated for something inside of you, or something outside of you? And don't get me wrong some values and I mean, some motivations can be both. They can be intrinsic and extrinsic, depending on how they show up.

Kiva Slade 9:56

So think about what values you have how those inform your goals and what's motivating you. Because I'm here to tell you, if it's something outside of you that's motivating you, that'll keep you going for a little while, but they will not keep you going for a long while. So that's where you're gonna need that intrinsic value, that intrinsic motivation to come and show itself and say, Hey, I'm here, I'm gonna keep you going as extrinsic is only going to take you so far.

Kiva Slade 10:31

And the last thing I really want you to think about is, as you look at your goals, and you've evaluated your values, and you're like, Okay, Kiva, I have these extrinsic and intrinsic motivations as it relates to this goal. This is why this goal is important to me. I want you to ask yourself a question. What do you need to give yourself permission to hope for as it relates to that goal? What do you need to give yourself permission to hope for? Sometimes we make goals out of places of desperation, despair, or lack. I want you to flip that on its head and make your goals out of a place of hope. I guarantee you, you'll show up differently for your goals, you'll go after your goals differently. So what do you need to give yourself permission to hope for?

Kiva Slade 11:42

So as you consider those things, as we head into February, the second month of the year, but some of us it might be so first or 1.5 month of the year. I want you to think through those. And I want you to stay with me, journey with me in this season three of the Collab with Kiva podcast, as we explore. What are those questions that we need to ask ourselves? What are those mindset challenges that we come up against? That we have to say self, how do I get through this? What have I learned in the past about me when I faced something similar, that I can apply now to get through this next one. So I hope that you are excited in which to join me explore some of our curiosities, figure out some of these, these life lessons that are there to sometimes strengthen, sometimes stretch, and I feel like at all times, grow us, and I'm excited for what is to come. So join me again, there will only be two episodes a month for this podcast, because hey, a girl has to be able to work within her capacity. And right now my capacity is two episodes a month and not four. So this will be every other week, that we will have these episodes and yeah, I'm excited. And you have something coming up for you that you're like, you know, I've always wanted to know this or to dive deeper into this. Have a coach coach me on this, please feel free to reach out. And if not, I will see you next time for Episode Two on the Collab with Kiva podcast bye. We just took another dose of vitamin Kiva.
